SSB Deluxe is a class project created with the prompt to “design an expansion for an existing game”. Alongside 3 other classmates, we focused on making 4 new characters and maps based on Nintendo’s existing IPs, as well as including balancing changes for the existing cast of Super Smash Bros. 4. I was the artist and designer for the “Inkling” character.

Prior to the release of SSB Ultimate, we believed that the Inkling would be one of the most desired and likely additions to the ever-growing cast of characters. I was tasked with the design of the Inkling, a challenge that required careful consideration of the source material. In order to faithfully transition the Splatoon representative into a unique Smash character, I utilized the series’ unique “Ink” mechanic. Many of Inkling’s Special Attacks will drop ink, allowing for the creation of customs paths along the stage that can be freely used for fluid movement with Side-B’s squid transformation.

Aside from the visual and gameplay design of the Inkling, I also composed the layout and constructed the final deliverable poster for the project. Although the official release of the Inkling in SSB Ultimate included some design differences, I believe I was able to create a faithful representation of the character that adhered to Splatoon and Smash Bros.’ core gameplay philosophies.
