About
Jack Yiming Guo
Hey!
I'm Jack, a game designer from Vancouver, Canada. I went to NYU for Game Design, and double minored in Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies.
I specialize in Systems and Gameplay design, UI/UX design, and Balancing/Tuning, but have been expanding my skills to include 3D, as well as basic audio design and video editing.
Over the years, I have played through countless games, but the genres that really spoke to me are role-playing games, collaborative team-based games, and more recently, fighting games.
As opposed to movies, which have rigid and clear-cut structures, well-designed RPGs allow the players to enjoy the story in a deeper level, as they are able to interact with and make decisions to personalize their own version of the world. Team games will always have a place in my heart, as some of my closest friendships were formed in the thousands of hours that I have spent in Team Fortress 2 or Diablo. Fighting games, at the highest levels, are beautiful chess matches. What I used to view as a genre defined by button mashing and reaction time, is truly about strategy and the subtle yet intense mind games between the players.
Due to my wide range of interests and skills, I want to be able to reflect my experiences in the games that I make, whether it immerses the player in a rich fantasy, or allows people to jump from their seats in excitement at a match-winning combo or a miraculous comeback.
Apart from visual art and game design, I enjoy hands-on work such as costume and prop-making, as well as more active hobbies, such as kendo and skiing. I hope that this tells you something about me, but if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!
